Date

Starting an Arabic course is a big step. Knowing what your first lesson involves makes it easier to arrive relaxed and ready to learn.

At ALS, we make sure every new student knows what to expect before their course begins. Here is a straightforward guide to your first Arabic lesson.

How to Prepare for Your First Arabic Lesson

You do not need any prior knowledge of Arabic before your first lesson. Arrive with a notepad, a pen, and a willingness to engage.

Before you attend, it is worth thinking about your reasons for learning Arabic. Whether you want to communicate with family, travel, or build professional skills, sharing your goals with your tutor helps them shape the course around what matters to you.

What Happens in Your First Arabic Lesson

Introductions and Settling In

Your first lesson starts with introductions. At ALS, we offer both group classes and one-to-one tuition, so the format varies depending on your chosen course. Either way, the focus is on making sure every student feels comfortable before any teaching begins.

This is also your opportunity to ask any initial questions and clear up anything before lessons get underway.

Course Overview

Although we share course structure details in advance, your tutor will walk through the plan at the start of your first lesson. This gives you a clear picture of what you will cover and how the course progresses.

Course Materials

Any books, guides, or links to online platforms you need will be provided in your first lesson. If you want to start practising at home straight away, ask your tutor about the best tools for learning Arabic outside of class.

Learning the Basics

For beginners, the first lesson introduces core Arabic skills — basic pronunciation and the Arabic alphabet. Building a solid foundation early is essential, as everything taught later depends on it.

If you are joining at a higher level, your first lesson will still cover foundational material relevant to your stage. Tutors keep the pace measured in early sessions so students can settle in without feeling overwhelmed.

Choosing the Right Arabic Course

Joining the right level from the start makes a significant difference to progress and confidence. Our free self-assessment tool takes the guesswork out of it.

ALS offers courses from complete beginner through to advanced level, both in person in London and online.
